Management of Production Process Waste and Canteen Food Waste 2021

P.M. Food Company Limited (PMF), a subsidiary, has continued the social responsibility policy of Premier Marketing Public Company Limited to enhance the value chain in managing waste from production processes by expanding efforts to utilize production resources efficiently. This has led to the implementation of a project to produce fertilizer from waste generated in the production process and food scraps from the canteen. This initiative aims to reduce the issue of production waste and food waste disposal into the community.

• Guidelines and Results

The company studied data on Composter food waste disposal machines from several companies to compare their efficiency in handling waste suitable for the company's specific types of waste. This included waste from the production process, waste from the canteen, both of which were trending upwards due to increased production volume and a larger number of employees, respectively.

In the fiscal year 2021, the company decided to purchase one Composter food waste disposal machine for trial. During the trial period, the focus was on learning about the types of waste that could be fed into the machine, including both production waste (fish snack products) and canteen food scraps. The trial involved gradually increasing the proportion of each waste type to determine the optimal ratio and quantity. The trial concluded that the machine could handle a maximum of 100 kilograms of production waste per day and the entire amount of canteen food waste, which averaged around 70-80 kilograms per day. The machine was operated four days a week, from Monday to Thursday, with the composted material being removed on Monday mornings. This process yielded approximately 500 kilograms of plant nutrient-rich fertilizer per week, totaling about 2,000 kilograms per month.

Regarding the management of this plant nutrient-rich fertilizer, sample analysis revealed a high nitrogen content, making it suitable for vegetable gardens, leafy greens, and foliage ornamental plants. The fertilizer produced by the composter in 2021 began to be distributed to employees in January 2022. This was intended to encourage employees with home vegetable gardens to try it as a substitute for chemical fertilizers, aiming to reduce their expenses and decrease the use of chemical fertilizers, which have environmental and health impacts on employees.

Targets
◦ Reduce production waste released into the community by 24 tons per year.
◦ Achieve 100% reduction of food waste from the canteen entering the community.
◦ Lower the expenses of employees and the community on purchasing chemical fertilizers.

Results compared to targets
◦ The targets of reducing the amount of production waste and food waste released into the community have been achieved.
